comment and i'll do this: 1. I'll respond with something random about you. 2. I'll tell you what song/movie reminds me of you. 3. I'll pick a liquor i'd take a shot of with you 4. I'll say something that only makes sense to you and me. 5. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you. 6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of. 7. I'll ask you something that I've always wondered or liked about you. 8. If I do this for you, you must post this on your journal.
so i commented, and her reply was...
1. The less sleep you've had, the more absurd/ random behavior results. 2. I Touch Myself-the Divinyls 3. Remember...i'm not a fan of drunk daniel. :P 4. I'm sure there are lots of things..seeing there are 4 years to pull from at this point, but i just woke up so my memory is weak... maybe Keroro comes up when i think of you at this moment. ...in the hat. 5. Something from freshman year as a rep i guess...probably you shouting out something random in assembly that had nothing to do with the topic at hand. 6. Cows. Specifically the AIM icon cow shaking it's butt. 7. I like that you are generally accepting of me (i think) and that you are always willing to help others out when you can. 8. If I do this for you, you must post this on your journal. |

| Chocolate Factory |
[Jul. 16th, 2005|10:19 am] |
Medieval Fights Apparently the whole thing started in Berkeley about 40 years ago. It started out as a party celebrating a grad student done with her medieval thesis. They fought with broom sticks and trash can lids back then. Yesterday when Dwight and I went, they were all wearing different styles of armors. Most of them made their own equipments, and while some of them bought their equipments, others traded. The guy I got to talk to was the president of the chapter on UC Berkeley campus. He let Dwight and I try on his armors and all, it was cool. According to Dwight, SCA (the organization these people belong to) is having a big campout in PA in August. And supposedly there are about 10,000 people going, but because if there's 10,000 people they have to register as a town and have their own post office and fire department and stuff, so they claim to have only 9,000 something people... SEH Today the SEH founders (I'm one of them) went to Emeryville to present our program to Terri Kurrash, an architect that has designed many hospitals and health facilities. She really liked the program and referred us to organizations that she thought would like us. She was cool, and so was her office building, which used to store eggs for Safeway 12 years ago. Patricia, who did the presentation, was awesome, by the way. I get to do one next week, hopefully everything goes well. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory This movie is funny, exciting, and touching. The plot is relatively faithful to the book and the oompa loompas were awesome. Johnny Depp was so good that I did not sense any elements of his previous movies, all I saw was Willy Wonka. It's a must see movie, and it's best seen at a huge screen. I'm going to see it again tomorrow with Dwight and his mom. Thank you Cyn for the milkshake.

| Medieval fights! |
[Jul. 14th, 2005|12:34 am] |
Dear friends who are or were once students of the UC Berkeley,
Did you know there is an organization called the Society for Creative Anachronism and they do medieval fights at the Rockridge BART Station parking lot every thursday night?
Dwight, a friend of mine since middle school and is now visiting Berkeley because his mother is doing research here for a month, and I will go into the field and collect first hand information on the subject tomorrow night. I will provide a more detailed report within 36 hours. For now, please entertain yourselves with the video clips of the fights of the week from all over the West Coast.
sincerely,
Daniel
P.S. - please click on the Blingo thing below and be my "Blingo Friend". Blingo is basically Google. The only difference is by using Blingo you get the chance to win something cool like an ipod every time you search.

| Have myself a little merry birthday~ |
[Jul. 1st, 2005|01:01 am] |
Birthday here's my answer to those who have been asking me what I'm doing for my birthday, which happens to be tomorrow (a friday! no MCAT class!)... 1. I will probably wake up at around 9:30 or so, take a shower, and then have a nice and slow breakfast at The Vault (best breakfast food ever; street North of Alcatraz & Adeline) 2. after breakfast I will bring in my car to Toyota of Berkeley for maintenance 3. I will then walk two blocks to UA Berkeley 7 and watch Mr. and Mrs. Smith (most likely the 11:30am one unless Toyota has a problem with taking my car at 11am. If that's the case then I'll go to the 1:30 one) 4. after the movie I will pick up the car and... I haven't decided on what to do yet. Maybe some dessert from Masses (Nicole said they're really good) or a nap. Another option would be to go explore the Tilden Park. We'll see. 5. Going back to Davis at 7:30pm Probably stopping by at 99 Ranch for some bread and asian beverage i.e. good bottled tea. Dear friends: Feel free to join me if you want good hash brown or Mr. and Mrs. Smith but do NOT feel obligated to spend time with me just because it's my birthday. Last year was a blast especially with the 23 kisses on the cheeks, but I'm totally comfortable with and used to being alone on my birthday. Thank you to everyone that has wished me a happy birthday. Empty Apartment It feels a bit quiet. Sarah barely stays here nowadays, she usually stays out until 2am or only comes back to change for work at around 9 in the morning. Alan and his girlfriend left for a wedding in M.A. and he's going to stay in NY for the rest of the summer. I haven't seen Micha since early this morning when he left for wherever with his scooter. I am the only left in the apartment! :-D

| Fly me to the moon~ |
[Jun. 25th, 2005|12:08 am] |
Hazzah Immigration Although last year the celebration was also rather low key, I actually forgot about celebrating or doing anything special for the day this year. I'm talking about June 18, the day I left Taiwan and also the day I landed on this country, thanks to time difference. So today in order to honor the special day that started the biggest change so far in my life, I wore the going-away gift "the gang" gave me, for two hours. The necklace is the symbol of a bird, signifying flying high and flying away. I believe it costed Steven and the rest about $50 for the necklace, I guess it's a good deal if it was being split up by 6 people. Of the 6, I got to see 4 of them when I went back this past winter, and Dwight is supposedly visiting Berkeley with his mom this August (his mom is doing a project at LBL). |

| | "Boy from New York City" - Manhattan Transfer | ] | Sumo! I had food from Sumo Burger for the first time today. Their burger (I had an advocado cheese burger) was pretty ok, but their fried porkchop rice plate was beyond good. Maybe it is because they made it Taiwanese style and so it's the taste I am used to and like, but personally I rank Sumo's Fried Porkchop Rice Plate the best in the Berkeley area... or maybe even the entire NorCal! The owner/chef was really nice too, he's a young alumni of Cal and was all excited about having a customer :-D. I think I'll be visiting Sumo a lot. It looks like it can be a good place to hang out too. (Sumo is in the Sather Alley across from Zee Zee Copy) No more SEP. SEH! The Founder :-P officially changed the organization name from Social Entrepreneurship Program (SEP) to Social Entrepreneuirs in Health (SEH). And just when I thought I won't get to play with University Seal buisness cards anymore, we decided to get them at the meeting today. I will probably use more of this set of business cards than the two years of RHA combined though. The meeting today was quite successful, we made a lot of decisions and are moving forward quite smoothly. Summer Jazz Today was the first time I got to warm up in about 4 weeks. Although I could only stay for half an hour, it was still lots of fun singing with Jazz Choir. Sabrina got a new orange jacket that's cute, and Dan got a haircut. I couldn't quite hear myself singing today, however, and I have no clue why. It was giving me a lot of trouble trying to learn the song on the spot :-(. Oh well, hopefully my hearing can get better soon... like when I wake up in a few hours.

| sylla~ sylla~ syllabus! |
[Jun. 23rd, 2005|01:00 am] |
I drafted the Syllabus for the Social Entrepreneur De-Cal today. Seems like once a week, 2 hours each class will be just right. According to my very first, very rough draft of the course calendar, the students will get to learn: communication skills, team work skills, efficient small group meeting techniques, market research skills, how to write a business proposal, financial projection for a business proposal, elevator-pitch/one-pager, putting together a presentation, how to work with boards of directors, how to write a grant proposal, how and where to seek non-monetary support/resources, how to write wrap-up reports, how to transition, and how to show appreciation to partners/sponsors/peers. The details of each class still need to be thought through but this seems to be a good start.

[Jun. 22nd, 2005|01:14 am] |
Unexpected IM Ah-Kang IMed me today telling me that he's in Seattle! I knew he was going to come study in the US one day but I didn't know he was coming this summer for a research position. Jimmy is also in Seattle. Those two are going to meet up once Jimmy is done with his current project. Ahh~ if only i don't have MCAT course 4 days a week I would totally go and hang out with them. Elementary school reunions are so much fun. ChiaoYi is taking TOEFL tomorrow and GRE in october. Maybe she'll be going to school somewhere in the US starting next year. I will still be an undergrad by then :-P. hmm... I wonder what kind of atmosphere it is when Jimmy and ChiaoYi meet up and hang out, after all they almost dated in elementary school... (all those silly love letters i had to deliver... I was totally the #1 wing man when I was 11) Scott also IMed me tonight asking about Psych grad programs in the US, he's probably going to apply while serving in the military in Taiwan (2 years of mandatory service). Suddenly I don't feel so "foreign" anymore. SEP (Social Entrepreneurship Program) So I'm designing this new de-cal class that will partner up with local non-profit health organizations and teach students the necessary skills to develop business proposals and carry out the projects. And then we will have the students present their proposals to the partners and if everything goes well the students will be helping these health organizations getting funds and maintaine, improve, or expand service to the community. It's a fun project that I am starting to spend a bit too much time thinking about when I also have to worry about MCAT. I'm drafting the syllabus these days for the class, very rough draft though. Hopefully this course can be a success and the extra energy of all the pre-med and big-on-health students can be put into organized good use. Voice Lessons Val IMed me tonight asking when we can start voice lesson, so we decided on having it every Tuesday night at her house where there's a piano even though supposedly sorority houses are closed for summer. She's trying to drag me to audition for American Idol with her. I don't know if I want to do it. It's going to be a looooong line waiting for the audition and then I'm gonna do my 30 second thing and then they're gonna be like "good, you can sing, too bad you're not really a star star because you didn't want to be here in the first place" and I will reply, "that's exactly true, do you know if there's good food around here?" and I will not appear on TV not that I want to anyway. Who else wants voice lessons? MCAT I am having the most difficult time ever to focus while doing MCAT passages. I don't know why but reading biochem text book was actually less tiring. The one good thing that came out from this MCAT experience so far is studying in Cafe Spuds, where there's good food (their pizza is mm~ mm~ good) and just enough distractions that creates a somewhat MCAT-like environment. Movies I went to see Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants with Tera and Cyn two weekends ago. It was an ok movie. It was a typical "girl movie" that had excess skin showing and unreasonable jump-into-water-one-after-another-then-kiss scene. I would say "Then and Now" (1995 with Demi Moore, I was forced to watch it at Sabrina's place) was a similar and better movie though. Batman Begins is a fun movie. It's a lot better than all the other Batman movies. The story was pretty ok and the flow was good. My only problem with it was the villain's plan which involved that microwave was not reasonable and would have vaporized the people around it. But that's all I'm gonna say about it in case someone reading this post hasn't seen the movie yet. I'm looking forward to seeing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in July.

| hot girl on the bus |
[Jun. 30th, 2004|05:30 pm] |
|
I went to Safeway this afternoon (just an hour ago actually), and when i got on to bus 51, there's this hot girl on the bus. She looks sort of like Beau, but even more beautiful. However, I think that was not the first time i've ever seen her. Just earlier today, after Soc3AC when Brenda and I were walking toward Telegraph, she was walking up Bancroft and passed by Brenda and I. Again, I just wanted to proof that I have good memories... but in order to do that, I should have ask the girl if it was her that walked by us earlier.. and then ask for her phone number, email, AIM sn, birthday, sign, bloodtype, favorite food... food... i'm hungry... I turn 21 tomorrow and I have no idea where i'm gonna be drinking... any suggestions? |

| Pops Concert. STEPHEN IS NOW A BASS!!! |
[Jun. 7th, 2004|01:11 am] |
the Pops concert started out with Jazz Choir, doing their usual relaxing oldies with typical Gwyne Brush style choreography. Carolyn Taylor is graduating I remember the days being in TIT with her, and also when her father died we went to the memorial service to sing, and then at the reception I told her something funny to try to make her smile. she's a strong girl, and a four girls in her family are good dancers. The song Jeff and his group wrote for Music Theory was pretty cool, Justin also went up to do some record scratching. Concert Choir was ok, the kids were shy and had no clue what's going on still, just like how it was when i was in it sophomore year.
GOSSIP! Are Stephen and Laura Burns. going out??? Kitri asked me after the concert too! Josh thinks their not... so i guess they're not. But they sure showed a lot of emotion for each other during their solo piece... but then again, but of them are very good singers that can manipulate people's thoughts with their voices.
So it was time for Madz to perform, and when Gardias asked the seniors to line up, the line was so long that it went from stage left to stage right. about 20 of them are graduating, and 12 out of these 20 were the ones that went to Hawaii with me two years ago. Anyway, Issac did a great job doing solo for Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up", and Josh also did a great job for the spiritual solo. Have fun in Australia, Madz!
Treble Chorus did a really good job today. Although I relatively like bass-less music less than full ensemble music, i gotta say they did a very good job singing. "Build Me Up Buttercup" wasn't as good as it could be, but i guess Vet's Theatre is just not the best place for showcase-like performance without sound system supporting.
Issac and Eric did "Agony" from "Into the Woods" as their solo piece, as I have mentioned earlier today. It was just great to hear it somewhere other than my DVD, heehee. I had the same feeling I had last year when the Mad men did "Men in Tights", muwahahaha!
While the Orchestra was performing, I hung out with Laura Burns, Mica (Congrats Mica for winning the whatever award! you totally deserved it! You've been my favorite alto+harpist since the day I met you!), Laura Bertleson, and Jacob (who will be living in CKC next year) for a bit. Laura Bertleson promised to give me 1 dollar off discount next time i visit Jamba Juice while she's working. hmm... her sister, Pam (who went to senior ball with me and is the nicest person on earth, still has finals coming up, I guess that's why she didn't go today.
I did get to hear the Orchestra perform "Pirates of the Carribean Medley", it was really good, especially when the first chair violist started "sword fighting" with the conductor .
The very last song this year (by the way, no one crossdressed... ) was a medley that started with... the "show business~" song and then something something, and then "Blue Skies" and then it ended with "God Bless America"... great, great choice.
After the concert, guess who I ran into? Ian Wallace!! We hugged, and then we didn't know what else to say, so it was awkward. But I told him to get onto thefacebook so I can add him (he goes to NYU). And then Kitri also came out to the lobby. She asked me about GOSSIP (see above), and then told me that she's gonna go give blood. She's trying to organize a Madz/Jazz super big bang reunion party with BBQ and Volleyball and EVERYBODY. So my task until next Sunday is to try to contact Yu and see if he can come back to California this summer. YAY Kitri!!!! Did I ever write an entry on the memories of Kitri? I can't remember... I really should though.
Emerson, Christina, Jacob, and I (yes, all Berkeley) talked for a bit about CKC and Jacob will never be able to socialize as long as he lives there so he needs to come hang out with me down in Unit 3... and then Jacob left... forced by his parents... so Christina and Emerson and I talked a bit more until I stole a cookie from the concession table (don't worry, the mom working there saw me, she gave me a big smile and told me to steal more) and had some water. Then Emerson and I went home. |

Portrait of the Counselor (iNFj)
The Counselor Idealists are abstract thought and speech, cooperative in reaching their goals, and directive and introverted in their interpersonal roles. Counselors focus on human potentials, think in terms of ethical values, and come easily to decisions. The small number of this type (little more than 2 percent) is regrettable, since Counselors have an unusually strong desire to contribute to the welfare of others and genuinely enjoy helping their companions. Although Counsleors tend to be private, sensitive people, and are not generally visible leaders, they nevertheless work quite intensely with those close to them, quietly exerting their influence behind the scenes with their families, friends, and colleagues. This type has great depth of personality; they are themselves complicated, and can understand and deal with complex issues and people.
Counselors can be hard to get to know. They have an unusually rich inner life, but they are reserved and tend not to share their reactions except with those they trust. With their loved ones, certainly, Counselors are not reluctant to express their feelings, their face lighting up with the positive emotions, but darkening like a thunderhead with the negative. Indeed, because of their strong ability to take into themselves the feelings of others, Counselors can be hurt rather easily by those around them, which, perhaps, is one reason why they tend to be private people, mutely withdrawing from human contact. At the same time, friends who have known an Counselor for years may find sides emerging which come as a surprise. Not that they are inconsistent; Counselors value their integrity a great deal, but they have intricately woven, mysterious personalities which sometimes puzzle even them.
Counselors have strong empathic abilities and can become aware of another's emotions or intentions -- good or evil -- even before that person is conscious of them. This "mind-reading" can take the form of feeling the hidden distress or illnesses of others to an extent which is difficult for other types to comprehend. Even Counselors can seldom tell how they came to penetrate others' feelings so keenly. Furthermore, the Counselor is most likely of all the types to demonstrate an ability to understand psychic phenomena and to have visions of human events, past, present, or future. What is known as ESP may well be exceptional intuitive ability-in both its forms, projection and introjection. Such supernormal intuition is found frequently in the Counselor, and can extend to people, things, and often events, taking the form of visions, episodes of foreknowledge, premonitions, auditory and visual images of things to come, as well as uncanny communications with certain individuals at a distance.
Introverted iNtuitive Feeling Judging (INFJ)
Beneath the quiet exterior, INFJs hold deep convictions about the weightier matters of life. Those who are activists -- INFJs gravitate toward such a role -- are there for the cause, not for personal glory or political power.
INFJs are champions of the oppressed and downtrodden. They often are found in the wake of an emergency, rescuing those who are in acute distress. INFJs may fantasize about getting revenge on those who victimize the defenseless. The concept of 'poetic j ustice' is appealing to the INFJ.
"There's something rotten in Denmark." Accurately suspicious about others' motives, INFJs are not easily led. These are the people that you can rarely fool any of the time. Though affable and sympathetic to most, INFJs are selective about their friends . Such a friendship is a symbiotic bond that transcends mere words.
INFJs have a knack for fluency in language and facility in communication. In addition, nonverbal sensitivity enables the INFJ to know and be known by others intimately.
Writing, counseling, public service and even politics are areas where INFJs frequently find their niche.
Introverted iNtuition Introverted intuitives, INFJs enjoy a greater clarity of perception of inner, unconscious processes than all but their INTJ cousins. Just as SP types commune with the object and "live in the here and now" of the physical world, INFJs readily grasp the hidden psychological stimuli behind the more observable dynamics of behavior and affect. Their amazing ability to deduce the inner workings of the mind, will and emotions of others gives INFJs their reputation as prophets and seers. Unlike the confining, routinizing nature of introverted sensing, introverted intuition frees this type to act insightfully and spontaneously as unique solutions arise on an event by event basis.
Extraverted Feeling Extraverted feeling, the auxiliary deciding function, expresses a range of emotion and opinions of, for and about people. INFJs, like many other FJ types, find themselves caught between the desire to express their wealth of feelings and moral conclusions about the actions and attitudes of others, and the awareness of the consequences of unbridled candor. Some vent the attending emotions in private, to trusted allies. Such confidants are chosen with care, for INFJs are well aware of the treachery that can reside in the hearts of mortals. This particular combination of introverted intuition and extraverted feeling provides INFJs with the raw material from which perceptive counselors are shaped.
Introverted Thinking The INFJ's thinking is introverted, turned toward the subject. Perhaps it is when the INFJ's thinking function is operative that he is most aloof. A comrade might surmise that such detachment signals a disillusionment, that she has also been found lacking by the sardonic eye of this one who plumbs the depths of the human spirit. Experience suggests that such distancing is merely an indication that the seer is hard at work and focusing energy into this less efficient tertiary function.
Extraverted Sensing INFJs are twice blessed with clarity of vision, both internal and external. Just as they possess inner vision which is drawn to the forms of the unconscious, they also have external sensing perception which readily takes hold of worldly objects. Sensing, however, is the weakest of the INFJ's arsenal and the most vulnerable. INFJs, like their fellow intuitives, may be so absorbed in intuitive perceiving that they become oblivious to physical reality. The INFJ under stress may fall prey to various forms of immediate gratification. Awareness of extraverted sensing is probably the source of the "SP wannabe" side of INFJs. Many yearn to live spontaneously; it's not uncommon for INFJ actors to take on an SP (often ESTP) role.
Famous INFJs:
Nathan, prophet of Israel Aristophanes Chaucer Goethe Robert Burns, Scottish poet U.S. Presidents:
Martin Van Buren James Earl "Jimmy" Carter
Nathaniel Hawthorne, author, poet Fanny Crosby, (blind) hymnist Mother Teresa of Calcutta Fred McMurray (My Three Sons, various movies) Shirley Temple Black, child actor, ambassador Martin Luther King, Jr., civil rights leader, martyr James Reston, newspaper reporter Shirley McClain, actor (Sweet Charity, ...) Piers Anthony, author ("Xanth" series) Michael Landon, actor (Highway to Heaven, Little House on the Prairie) Tom Selleck, actor (Magnum, P. I., Mr. Baseball) Oprah Winfrey, talk show host John Katz, critic, author Paul Stookey, folk singer (Peter, Paul and Mary) Angela Lansbury, actor (Murder, She Wrote) U. S. Senator Carol Moseley-Braun (D-IL) Richard Gere, actor (Pretty Woman, Sommersby) Billy Crystal, actor, comedian Carrie Fisher, actor (Star Wars)
Introverted iNtuiting Feeling Judging
by Marina Margaret Heiss INFJs are distinguished by both their complexity of character and the unusual range and depth of their talents. Strongly humanitarian in outlook, INFJs tend to be idealists, and because of their J preference for closure and completion, they are generally "doers" as well as dreamers. This rare combination of vision and practicality often results in INFJs taking a disproportionate amount of responsibility in the various causes to which so many of them seem to be drawn.
INFJs are deeply concerned about their relations with individuals as well as the state of humanity at large. They are, in fact, sometimes mistaken for extroverts because they appear so outgoing and are so genuinely interested in people -- a product of the Feeling function they most readily show to the world. On the contrary, INFJs are true introverts, who can only be emotionally intimate and fulfilled with a chosen few from among their long-term friends, family, or obvious "soul mates." While instinctively courting the personal and organizational demands continually made upon them by others, at intervals INFJs will suddenly withdraw into themselves, sometimes shutting out even their intimates. This apparent paradox is a necessary escape valve for them, providing both time to rebuild their depleted resources and a filter to prevent the emotional overload to which they are so susceptible as inherent "givers." As a pattern of behavior, it is perhaps the most confusing aspect of the enigmatic INFJ character to outsiders, and hence the most often misunderstood -- particularly by those who have little experience with this rare type.
Due in part to the unique perspective produced by this alternation between detachment and involvement in the lives of the people around them, INFJs may well have the clearest insights of all the types into the motivations of others, for good and for evil. The most important contributing factor to this uncanny gift, however, are the empathic abilities often found in Fs, which seem to be especially heightened in the INFJ type (possibly by the dominance of the introverted N function).
This empathy can serve as a classic example of the two-edged nature of certain INFJ talents, as it can be strong enough to cause discomfort or pain in negative or stressful situations. More explicit inner conflicts are also not uncommon in INFJs; it is possible to speculate that the causes for some of these may lie in the specific combinations of preferences which define this complex type. For instance, there can sometimes be a "tug-of-war" between NF vision and idealism and the J practicality that urges compromise for the sake of achieving the highest priority goals. And the I and J combination, while perhaps enhancing self-awareness, may make it difficult for INFJs to articulate their deepest and most convoluted feelings.
Usually self-expression comes more easily to INFJs on paper, as they tend to have strong writing skills. Since in addition they often possess a strong personal charisma, INFJs are generally well-suited to the "inspirational" professions such as teaching (especially in higher education) and religious leadership. Psychology and counseling are other obvious choices, but overall, INFJs can be exceptionally difficult to pigeonhole by their career paths. Perhaps the best example of this occurs in the technical fields. Many INFJs perceive themselves at a disadvantage when dealing with the mystique and formality of "hard logic", and in academic terms this may cause a tendency to gravitate towards the liberal arts rather than the sciences. However, the significant minority of INFJs who do pursue studies and careers in the latter areas tend to be as successful as their T counterparts, as it is *iNtuition* -- the dominant function for the INFJ type -- which governs the ability to understand abstract theory and implement it creatively.
In their own way, INFJs are just as much "systems builders" as are INTJs; the difference lies in that most INFJ "systems" are founded on human beings and human values, rather than information and technology. Their systems may for these reasons be conceptually "blurrier" than analogous NT ones, harder to measure in strict numerical terms, and easier to take for granted -- yet it is these same underlying reasons which make the resulting contributions to society so vital and profound. |
